Challenge Charter Middle School

Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) is a community-based public charter school designed to meet the unique needs of Far Rockaway’s at-risk students and families. Since 2010, Challenge Prep has provided children and families in Far Rockaway with a progressive, student-centered educational program that supports the academic growth and achievement of a diverse group of students. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Les Mullings, Founder/CEO, Challenge Prep has expanded from an elementary school program to a program that serves scholars in grades K-8. Debra Sostre is the 6-8 Principal.

Challenge Prep’s mission is to cultivate the intellectual, social, emotional and ethical development of its students and to prepare them to compete successfully for admission to high-performing public, private and parochial high schools in New York City. The new middle school program is an essential part of Challenge Prep’s strategy to achieve its mission. Challenge Prep’s middle school program will serve a population of scholars that reflects that of the traditional public schools in the economically distressed communities of the Rockaways and Community School District 27. Challenge Prep believes that demographics do not determine destiny and that low-income scholars can be successful at all levels of K-12 education and in the colleges of their choice.

While our community is not unlike many others across the nation, the Challenge Prep approach to serving our students and families certainly is. Challenge Prep’s educational model is student-centered, data-driven and emphasizes differentiated instruction to address the needs and learning styles of each student. The Challenge Prep middle school program engages students through an innovative blended learning model that utilizes a variety of technologies and incorporates school-wide “essential questions” and challenge- based learning. Challenge Prep’s teachers and academic administrators work daily in professional learning communities and use cutting edge technologies to provide effective and targeted instruction to its students. The children of the Rockaways deserve nothing less.
